Call Me Joan

What's in a name? "Joan" might be bland, it might be exciting - it all depends on the context. Read on for my own little unique take on the universe and watch me try to figure out what face I want to present to the world each day.

Donovan's Musical Baton

Ding! I'm it.

Total volume of music on my computer:
It would be easier to answer this if I'd been organized enough to have it all in one spot. The folder I can locate easily has 980MBs. There are lots of other folders, though. I'd guess about a gig and a quarter.

The last CD I bought:
The Queen greatest hits triple CD. I was missing the ones that got stolen from my garage a few years back. Now I've replaced them...

Song playing right now:
Nothing, actually. I'm at home for a change and don't usually have music going when I'm on the computer. So instead I'll answer:
--> CD in your car right now: Talking Heads, greatest hits disc 1
--> Last song played on your iPod: Something off one of the more obscure Tears For Fears CDs

Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me:
Ooh, really tough.

1. Everybody Wants To Rule The World (Tears For Fears). This song is key for two reasons: it was on the TFF tape I had with me for the summer I spent in France when I was 11 (and is thus one of the reasons I survived that summer at all), and it was featured in the closing credits of Real Genius, the #1 all-time favorite movie of my teen years.

2. American Pie (Don McLean version). The first time I ever got dumped was to this song. So you could say it means a lot to me, if not that it's something I listen to a lot. (This was over 15 years ago, by the way - I've been over it for at least a decade and have happily enjoyed the song again ever since.)

3. Onion Skin (Boom Crash Opera). Brings me right back to college, living with HV and trying to get ourselves pumped up for exams. (boom ca-rash. o-pe-ra. HEY!)

4. All You Zombies (The Hooters). Reminds me of one particular night in college where I had a great time, accidentally disrupted HV's evening out with her boyfriend, got hit on, did the right thing by my man, and now think fondly of this song forevermore. Epic college evening.

5. Can't remember the name of it, but it's a duet from Tosca. There's one particular line that Scarpia sings about "Spasimi d'ira, spasimi d'amor" that has always stuck with me. (Translation: "Spasms of hate, spasms of love"). In bygone days I spent quite a lot of time pondering this phrase and how it did/didn't apply to what I was feeling right then.

I guess I answered this a bit untraditionally. The way I see it, the 5 songs I listen to a lot right now are basically meaningless. I don't go out of my way to hear songs over and over again (most recent notable exception was Somewhere Only We Know by Keane), so I put down the songs that bubbled up into my consciousness when I tried instead to think of music that evoked memories for me. The list sounds darker than it is, but I didn't want to be too cliche about my choices.

Five people to whom I'm passing the baton:
Um. HV. I don't have anyone else to pass the baton to that Donovan didn't get to first.

Love,
J.

Ok, I'm on it. But first, a couple comments and questions.

    1. All You Zombies. "Yeah, they were the Isrealites!" Great song, but I have absolutely no recollection about you ruining a date (and I should remember as they were few and far between.) I just remember calling into 103.7 (I think) requesting it and getting on the air. That started my whole fascination of calling into radio stations...but I digress.

    2. No Wonderful Tonight? ; )
