Ok Cubs Fans, Listen Up.
So this week, Monday comes and the Cubs win big. Tuesday morning, the sportscasters are predicting the Cubs will lock up the wild card race by Thursday. Then Tuesday night happens (I went to the game, by the way), and they choke HARD. Every time Cincy got a hit for a while, it ended up being a 2-run homer. Total blowout. All of a sudden the sportscasters switch from predicting victory to predicting another century without a pennant, and interviewing sports psychologists to learn why exactly the Cubs must choke at the very door of success. (And then they lose again today... sigh...)
Maybe because the fans start every year by saying the Cubs suck. Maybe because whenever they DO get close to winning, the fans predict they'll choke. Self-fulfilling prophesy, anyone? I know the fans aren't the ones playing the game, but if you're a Cub, you see the headlines too, and that can't be very uplifting. Year after year after year of being told you'll never get to the World Series - sometimes because of a curse involving a goat from long before you were a baseball player. What-ever.
The thing that really pisses me off at the Cubs games is when the crowd boos Sammy Sosa. YOU DO NOT BOO YOUR OWN TEAM! I don't care how badly they're playing, how much smack they're talking (that would be you, Mr. Hawkins), YOU DO NOT BOO YOUR OWN TEAM. Never ever ever. End of story. The poor Cubs, if they do eke this out and make the wild card, it'll be to spite us. They don't deserve that kind of treatment, and we as fans don't deserve a team in the playoffs if we're going to act like that. Grow up, people. Cheer your heart out when they do something good. If they don't, then just shut up.
So Go Cubs Go! You can do it! And if you don't, I'll like you anyway. You get people going, you get offices buzzing, you get 3 girls to go to a game on their own and high-five each other when something good - but lost on them why it's good - happens.
I'll take it. And I promise, I will never boo you when I'm at your game. Now will you please go out there and kick some ass?
Love,
Joan
